It’s so easy to put to together an simple coleslaw recipe! You can easily feed a family of four, or serve a party of 400! The basic coleslaw ingredients are basically cabbage, carrots and your favorite creamy coleslaw dressing (or vinaigrette!)

ORIGIN OF “COLESLAW”

The word coleslaw came from the Dutch term ‘koolsla’, which itself is the shortened term for koolsalade, meaning cabbage salad. In the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, many Dutch settlers came into New York (originally New Amsterdam) and with them, brought their recipe for chilled cabbage salad.

CONGEALED SALADS (JELLIED SALADS)

Congealed Salads (Jellied salads) became popular from the late 20’s through the 50’s. The trend for pairing lemon or lime-flavored Jello with vegetables like shredded cabbage and carrots sounds a little odd, but it was very popular. At one time, the Jello company also made vegetable-flavored jello.

Practically speaking, using Jello was certainly easier than making aspic from scratch.

Even today, one can still find congealed salad (most likely lime-flavored jello with pineapple and carrots) served on the best china platter at family reunions throughout the southern states. 😉

I love a crunchy coleslaw. I will sometimes add some garlic or use aioli in place of mayonniase and some shredded radish for a bit of bite

I love coleslaw, and not just for BBQ’s. One of my most favourite sandwich combinations is Chicken, Cheese and Coleslaw, but the best coleslaw is home-made. This recipe is a winner!
